Two Pertronic Fire Alarm Control Panels have comfortably passed a challenging earthquake simulation test.
In early September Christchurch testing laboratory Holmes Solutions tested a 900 mm F120A Fire Alarm Control Panel and a 900 mm F100A Extinguishing Agent Release Panel.
At Holmes Solutions the panels were mounted on a hydraulic shake-table and given a thorough shaking, using a test protocol based on International Standard ICC-ES AC-156, Acceptance Criteria for Seismic Certification by Shake-Table Testing of Nonstructural Components. The peak acceleration was so violent that cables laying on the shake-table became airborne when the table was shaken vertically.
Both panels were fitted with seismic battery restraints to prevent the batteries jumping about inside the cabinets. Aside from the battery restraints, the panels required no other modifications.
According to Holmes Solutions, “Shake-table testing using the methodology outlined in ICC-AC156, carefully adapted for New Zealand seismic demand, in our experience satisfies the requirements of NZS 4219 Section 4, and gives specifying engineers the confidence they need to sign off on the seismic performance of those tested building systems… tested systems can be specified anywhere in New Zealand with confidence.”
Fire alarm systems should remain fully operational during and after a big earthquake. The successful completion of this test programme provides further confirmation that Pertronic fire alarm control panels meet the most demanding project requirements.
